Welcome to the Breastfeeding Community of Practice
The Breastfeeding Community of Practice is a volunteer network of individuals who support breastfeeding in Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia.
The Community of Practice connects with individuals, communities and organizations that are interested in creating a breastfeeding-friendly culture in Nova Scotia and providing the support to help make it happen.
Our goal is to increase awareness about the importance of breastfeeding, build community capacity and help people achieve purposeful action to support change.

It’s that time of year again where we are beginning to seek nominations for the Breastfeeding Champion Award. This award and recognition will be given out at our annual potluck in the New Year to be held on January 31st from 6:30-8:30 pm (more details to be shared next month)! Below is a review of the criteria and how to make your nominations:
Halifax Breastfeeding Community of Practice - Breastfeeding Champion Award
The Breastfeeding Community of Practice is a volunteer peer-to peer-network driven by community members with a shared passion for breastfeeding. Members interact regularly to share information, build relationships, develop expertise and problem solve.
Members include individuals from a variety of backgrounds; doulas, public health nurses, mothers, La Leche League leaders, students, professors, nutritionists, lactation consultants and more.
The goal is to increase awareness about the importance of breastfeeding, build community capacity, and help people achieve purposeful action to support change.
Breastfeeding Champion Award
This award is given out quarterly as a way to formally recognize an individual or an organization who has gone above and beyond in promoting, protecting, and supporting breastfeeding.
How do individuals and organizations get chosen?
Nominations are accepted from CoP members or any member of the community at any time. Nominees who are not chosen for the award can be re-nominated to be considered in the future. Steering Committee members will not be eligible.
At the quarterly CoP Steering committee meetings, all nominations received since the previous meeting will be reviewed based on the award criteria and a successful individual or organization will be chosen. The decision will be based on consensus of the committee members who are present at the meeting. The CoP Steering Committee meets in March, June, September & December. After being contacted and with permission from the successful nominee, information will be shared on our website and Facebook site to recognize the commitment and thank them for the work that they do.
How do I nominate an individual or an organization for the award?
Nominations are accepted from CoP members (including Steering Committee members) or any member of the community at any time. Nominees must live, work or volunteer in the HRM. Steering Committee members will not be eligible. Individuals who provide support for breastfeeding as a part of their paid employment will not be eligible. Nominees who are not chosen for the award can be re-nominated to be considered in the future.

How does the Steering Committee make a decision about who to choose for the quarterly award?
The Steering Committee membership is representative of diverse experience and backgrounds to review the wide range of deserving nominees. Members will review all nominations and as a group consider which nominee has gone above and beyond to promote, protect and support breastfeeding. Though all nominees may be deserving of the award the Steering committee will come to consensus regarding who to award it.
