World Breastfeeding Week 2014
Breastfeeding: A Winning Goal For Life!

World Breastfeeding Week was first celebrated in 1992 by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) and is now celebrated in over 120 countries worldwide by Unicef, World Health Organization, and their partners including individuals, organizations, and governments. The goal is to re-establish a global breastfeeding culture and promote, protect and support breastfeeding everywhere.
In 1990 eight global goals, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), were set by governments and the United Nations to fight poverty and promote healthy and sustainable development in a comprehensive way by 2015. There are regular "countdowns" to gauge progress in achieving the goals. This year's WBW theme responds to the latest countdown by asserting the importance of increasing and sustaining the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding in the post 2015 agenda, and engaging as many groups, and people of various ages as possible. The UN's Scientific Committee on Nutrition illustrated how breastfeeding is linked to each of the Millennium Development Goals as illustrated below.

World Breastfeeding Week Family Fair 2014
|
Another successful World Breastfeeding Week Family Fair was organized by the Breastfeeding Community of Practice in collaboration with the IWK Health Centre on Saturday October 4th, 2014. The event is to help celebrate and bring awareness to breastfeeding and why it is important to all members of society. A Pig's Jig was present and helped to entertain everyone who attended with songs, juggling, and face painting. The Kidszone was a hit with the Photo Booth, sandboxes, and playdough, not to mention the "Pin The Baby on the Breast". There was food and prizes, Community Booths, and we had great participation in the International Quintessence Challenge at 11am sharp with 88 Mothers and 92 children latched on simultaneously!
Leslie Bagg was presented with our October 2014 Breastfeeding Champion Award at the Fair. Check out our Breastfeeding Champion tab for more details. Congrats Leslie! |
